Featured Founder: CarePro.io, Innovating the Software for Community Care Providers!
A medical assistant, an educator, healthcare consultant, and now, an entrepreneur? Wendell Scott is working on creating a management software, CarePro.io, to address the technological shortcomings of group homes and shared living facilities. “We want to promote a culture that helps fix more than just the issues that technology solves,” says Wendell. We sat down with him to pick his brain about how he plans to achieve this lofty goal of introducing new management technology into group homes and shared living facilities.
Some entrepreneurs get worn down by their day jobs, and others have an 'Aha' moment before making the switch to owning their business… What was your inspiration for starting the company?
I’ve been an entrepreneur since high school. I started an eBay account in 1999, so I have always had that entrepreneurial spirit. I was a teacher at a technical institute where I taught clinical medical assisting, and I also did some consulting with a local group home where I really began to identify the need in the market. I think my entrepreneurial sense kind of just kicked in and said, "Hey, I think I can solve the issues this market is facing." That was my ‘Aha' moment for this venture.
What makes you uniquely qualified to start this business?
First and foremost, I have a background as a Clinical Medical Instructor. Actually, where I used to teach a majority of the students who came through the medical program were at one point direct support professionals. They're essentially the end user I’m targeting this application to. I got to understand the needs of the industry they came from. I also had family working in home care and I saw that they struggled to find great software solutions. With my background in web design and my medical background, I figured I had what it took to connect the dots and create a great solution to the market.
While most larger companies have management teams and a board of directors, as your company’s CEO & main employee, how do you approach major decision making, like changing your name from ComplyPro to CarePro.io?
It’s a combination of a few things. For one, I am aware that there are things about running a business that I am not as proficient at. What I do is I look for help in the areas I’m not so great in. I consider myself a lifelong learner, and I'm aware that I have a lot of strengths as well as weaknesses. I try to find what I call “A-Team players” with the most knowledge in the field and learn from them. That has been my strategy up until this point.
What are your goals for CarePro.io in 5-10 years? What is the end goal?
I would say that our overall goal is to change the way home and community care providers service their clients. We want to promote a culture that helps fix more than just the issues that technology solves. For instance, we are working on getting our blog up and running where we plan to tackle issues, like solving high turnover rates, but a lot of that requires steps to be taken offline.
